about

In his 84th year on Planet Earth, the Godfather of Roots, Reggae and Dub Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry presents to the world, a Vinyl box set that reaches back to the final hours of his infamous Black Ark Studio in Washington Gardens, Kingston, Jamaica.

In the late 1970’s, Lee Perry entered an increasingly erratic and destructive phase, that resulting in the burning down of his studio. But prior to this point, he was still producing almost daily, with his in-house session band, the Upsetters. Driving them towards ever ethereal arrangements that reflected Perry’s state of mind in this time. Clouded In thick smoke, and mystical vibes, this resulted in many experimental but unfinished rhythm tracks and session tapes. Some of which saw the light of day under various incarnations, but Perry himself was never truly happy with them

We fast forward now, nearly 40 years, and Lee Perry has teamed up once again, with his long-time collaborator, Producer and Mixer, Daniel Boyle, to re-cut, Mix and Dub four handpicked rhythms, from this point in Lee’s Black Ark history to complete the recordings. Maintaining 100% analogue production values, using his old Black Ark equipment.

They recruited veteran musicians, Dennis Bovell, Hughie Izachaar and Vin Gordon, alongside Daniels every changing Rolling Lion All Stars Session Band; for this mission, and entered the studio to record.

Lee then completed the project with veteran vocalists, Congo Ashanti Roy, Danny Red, Hughie Izachaar and Sylford Walker. To present to the world, Four Stereo Vinyl Dubplates, each with a Vocal Cut, Dub Version, Lee Perry Vocal and Horns Dub, presented in a Disco Mix Fashion.
